My wife (jax) and me (jim) decided to create a blog so all our fans (ie, our moms) can keep up with what we're doing, and not have to scroll through facebook everyday and try to piece it all together.
We also wanted to keep track of all the wines we drink - you know, take a picture of the label, write what we think about it, if we recommend it etc. We don't claim to be sommeliers, and we don't use words like bouquet and legs when describing wines... at least, we don't unless our wine snob friend Richie is around.
But here's the thing, Jax is a big wine drinker, and we've had so many different bottles over the past year, it's almost impossible to remember what we had, where it was from, how much it cost etc. I for one can only remember that I like the white rabbit wine in a box from France, and that's probably only because it comes in a handy dandy 1 liter box - so you get an extra couple of glasses out of it.
Oh, and as for the title of this blog? It's Jax bday tomorrow, and as a surprise I'm jetting us off to San Fran!! Woohooo!!!
So we'll take lots of pictures and hopefully drink some wine and post our discoveries here. Jax is almost sick with anticipation because she figures I'm taking her somewhere, and she kinda hates surprises... but I bought the tickets in January and have been sitting on this big surprise for 3 months, so I'm not going to ruin everything by spilling the beans now! I'm SUPER excited. What does the trip entail??
Well, I got us City Saver passes which let us ride the Cable Cars the whole time we're there!
we will have WAY cuter pictures upon our return!
Plus we get a cruise on (in?) San Francisco Bay.
And aside from that, we get admission to various aquariums, museums and stuff.
Museum of Modern Art, San Fran
Plus I got us SF Giants tickets for Friday night. Totally kick ass expensive seats too - none of this sitting in the right field bleaches crap (well, nothing wrong with bleachers per se, but this IS a birthday gift, so I bucked up for decent infield lower level tickets)
AT&T Park - Home of the 2010 World Series Champions, San Francisco Giants
My only concern is the weather isn't that great. It's only 14/15 degrees - a wee bit warmer than Vancouver but basically the same. A little cool, a little overcast, and unseasonably cold for the end of April.
But I'm super duper excited - I love flying, love having weekends away in cool cities! A 3-day trip is perfect - oh, I didn't mention that. We're leaving Thursday night (I'm kidnapping her from work at 3pm Thursday) and coming back at like, 8pm Sunday evening, so we've got ALL DAY Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. awesome.
We're staying at the InterContinental San Fran, and I really don't know if it's fantastic or crappy or what, but it's 4.5 stars and some of the reviews on Trip Advisor are great, some are horrible. Hard to say... but it has a gym, a pool, is central to downtown, so really, how bad could it be? I'm hoping it's awesome!
I haven't been to San Fran in ages - I'm thinking it was 2001 or so. I stayed with Suzie (not a girlfriend, just a good friend who I worked with in Japan) near Haight / Ashbury on Masonic Avenue. I borrowed her bike and drove through Golden Gate Park, saw the crashing waves of the Pacific. I took a ferry ride over to Sausalito and I can't even remember if I actually drove my bike over the Golden Gate Bridge, but I think I must have. I also went to Alcatraz, Chinatown, wandered the city... but I also remember being a little lonely, like I loved the city but really wanted to have someone I loved to share it with. Jeesh - thanks for taking 10 miserable years to bring me someone, universe!
Anyways, I'm really hoping there are a TON of sea lions. ARF ARF ARF!!
Jax likes to bark at sea lions. It's so embarrassing.
what a photogenic city! Can't wait!
Jeez.. now that I think about it, I hope Jax is as excited as me about this trip - it IS her birthday! In honour of her birthday I did NOT try to get us hockey tickets to the San Jose Sharks vs. LA Kings playoff game 5, to be played in San Jose on Saturday night.
It was tempting, but I just couldn't justify it... how to explain I got the tickets for her?? Couldn't be done. Plus they were wickedly expensive.
Alcatraz - I wonder if we'll go here?
Anyways - that's enough of the pre-San Fran blather. The next time I blog, we'll be back and I'll post our very own touristy pictures. woohoo!!
